It's a good idea to loosen up with a few practice swings before taking on this daunting opening hole. A good tee-shot is required to cross a lake in front of the tee-box so as to reach safety of the wide fairway. That achieved, the approach shot should be a routine short-to medium-iron to the strategically bunkered green.
HOLE 1 (PAR 4 ~ INDEX 5)
Beautiful but demanding, this hole plays slightly dogleg right with the distant Machinchang mountain range as the backdrop. Jungle fringes the entire right side and a good part on the left side of the fairway making accuracy a necessity. More accuracy and impeccable club selection are called for to get close to the pin, which is guarded by three large bunkers.
HOLE 2 PAR 4 ~ INDEX 9
A tight hole since it is surrounded by the jungle on three sides with the green set in a jungle glade. Depending on pin placement, the tee-shot will have to take into account the three bunkers guarding the front side of the generous and one at the rear.
HOLE 3 PAR 3 ~ INDEX 15
A straightforward driving hole offering a wide landing zone for the downhill drive making it quite a rare opportunity to pull out the driver and give the ball a good whack. However, positioning is the keyword to prosper on this hole as a pair of bunkers on both sides of the green narrows the scope of the approach shot. The best line of attack is from the right side of the centre of the fairway.
HOLE 4 PAR 4 ~ INDEX 13
This is the shortest hole on the course with an enthralling view of the seas beyond the green framed by two imposing jungle trees. Trouble comes in the form of huge freeform bunkers front and rear, a deep pot bunker on the left, a steep hollow rear left and a mound and steep slope to the right.
HOLE 5 | PAR 3 ~ INDEX 17
A relatively short par-five promising a birdie or a possible eagle opportunity provided the tee-shot is long and accurate. Short hitters are better off laying up short of the stream for a medium iron shot to the well-bunkered green.
HOLE 6 | PAR 5 ~ INDEX 11
With the corner of this sharp dogleg right hole guarded by overhanging trees and dense vegetation, a fade is the best opening shot on this long par-four. Be wary of the bunkers guarding the left side of the fairway and another front left of the green. Otherwise, the receptive green is a rewarding experience for the well-hit approach shot.
HOLE 7 | PAR 4 ~ INDEX 3
The longest hole but distance isn't the only factor as this double dogleg offering is the most difficult on the course. A good drive will have to carry over the stream some 180 metres of the tee and at the same time steer clear of the fairway traps. The big hitter may be tempted to get on the green in two but caution must be exercised as it requires a carry over water and a huge bunker ahead of a two-tiered green that is nothing short of demanding.
HOLE 8 | PAR 5 ~ INDEX 1
From the elevated tee, the drive must be guided to the left side of the fairway to avoid spraying the ball to the dense jungle on the right side of this slight dogleg right hole. Sand traps at the corner of the dogleg some 210 metres of the tee mete out severe punishment to shots straying too far left. The approach shot is over an undulating valley to a wide two-tiered green.
HOLE 9 | PAR 4 ~ INDEX 7
Its easy to be awestruck with the beautiful setting of this picturesque hole that has everything - clear mountain stream, dense jungle and the majestic Machinchang Mountain as the backdrop. It's equally easy to feel frustrated with your score if you tee-off with less than 100% focus as the drive demands both distance and accuracy to get the better of the stream beyond the tee-box and the jungle on both sides of the fairway.
